Commuter Alert: Howard Street Delays and Major I-80 Ramp Closures in San Francisco
San Francisco Traffic and Commute Update: February 24, 2026
Good morning, San Francisco. As we move through this Tuesday, February 24, commuters should prepare for a mix of ongoing streetscape projects and significant overnight ramp closures on our major arteries. With light rain forecast throughout the day, stopping distances will be longer and visibility may be reduced during the morning and evening rush. Drivers are urged to adjust their speeds and maintain a safe following distance.
Major Roadworks and Freeway Closures
The Transbay Howard Streetscape Project continues to be a primary source of downtown congestion. Expect intermittent lane closures and delays on Howard Street between The Embarcadero and 4th Street from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Today’s work involves safety upgrades and the installation of new traffic signal infrastructure. Drivers should consider using Folsom or Mission streets as alternate routes to avoid the heavy construction equipment near the Moscone Center area.
Caltrans has also scheduled several critical ramp closures tonight as part of the rehabilitation of the Central (US-101) and Bayshore (I-80) viaducts. Note the following impacts for the Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning commute:
- I-80 Eastbound: The off-ramp at 7th and Bryant streets will be closed overnight from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
- I-80 Westbound: The on-ramp at 7th and Harrison streets and the on-ramp at Harrison and 4th streets will be closed from 10:00 p.m. tonight until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow.
- Bay Bridge Access: The Eastbound First Street on-ramp to the Bay Bridge is scheduled for closure starting at 11:59 p.m. tonight. It will reopen by 7:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Public Transit Alerts: BART, Muni, and Caltrain
Public transit riders should account for several service adjustments and maintenance-related delays affecting today's schedule:
- BART: A 20-minute delay is currently reported on the Antioch Line between Antioch and Pittsburg/Bay Point due to essential track maintenance. For late-night travelers, expect delays of up to 30 minutes between Millbrae, SFO, and San Bruno starting at 9:00 p.m. for ongoing train control modernization work.
- Muni: Temporary stop relocations are in effect for the 14 Mission and 14R Mission Rapid lines near Russia and Persia avenues. Additionally, stop closures continue for the 36 Teresita at Warren and Locksley, and for the 12 Folsom and 27 Bryant at Folsom and 9th streets.
- Caltrain: Trains are operating on the revised schedule that took effect at the end of January. Electric service has been fully restored to Tamien Station, and commuters no longer need to rely on the previous VTA bridge bus service.
Commuters heading south out of the city should also be aware of the overnight closure of the Southbound US-101 connector ramp to Westbound CA-92 in San Mateo, which will be in effect from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. nightly through the rest of the week.
