Major Roadwork and Lane Closures

Commuters in San Francisco should prepare for localized delays today, Wednesday, January 21, 2026, due to several ongoing rehabilitation projects and scheduled ramp maintenance. A significant portion of the morning and midday commute will be impacted by work on 19th Avenue (Highway 1). Caltrans contractors are currently executing Phase 1 of the parking strip rehabilitation, which requires the closure of one southbound lane between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This work is affecting four-block segments at a time, so drivers should expect slower speeds when traveling through the Sunset District toward the South Bay.

Additionally, critical infrastructure work on the US-101 and I-80 viaducts is affecting major freeway access points. While the early morning closure of the Southbound US-101 off-ramp to Eastbound I-80 concluded at 5:00 a.m., overnight closures will resume late this evening. Specifically, the Westbound I-80 on-ramp at Harrison and 7th Streets, as well as the Eastbound I-80 on-ramp at 8th and Bryant Streets, are scheduled to close again at 11:00 p.m. tonight. These closures are part of a vital project to strengthen the 71-year-old viaducts and will remain in effect until 7:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

Public Transit and Rail Alerts

Public transportation services are largely operating on standard schedules today, though a few specific service alerts remain in place for regular riders:

  • BART: The agency published a major "root cause" investigation report today addressing recent system-wide disruptions. While current service is stable, riders should note that the report highlights equipment vulnerabilities in the Transbay Tube. Furthermore, passengers on the Yellow Line should prepare for 20-minute delays starting tomorrow, January 22, due to scheduled single-tracking between North Concord and Pittsburg/Bay Point.
  • Caltrain: The elevator at the San Mateo Station remains out of service today due to technical issues. This outage is expected to persist through mid-February. Passengers requiring ADA access are advised to utilize the Hayward Park or Burlingame stations.
  • Muni and AC Transit: Muni has resumed full subway service following maintenance earlier this week. However, AC Transit riders should note that the temporary bus stop closure for Route 59 at 1st Street and Lamplighter is still in effect through the end of today's service day.

Bridge and Commuter Outlook

Cross-bay travel remains subject to nightly construction patterns. The Golden Gate Bridge is continuing its weeknight overnight lane closures to facilitate the construction of the Suicide Deterrent System. While lanes will be restricted during the late-night hours, the roadway will remain open to all vehicle traffic. On the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, a right-lane closure on Westbound I-580 will be in effect tonight from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., which may impact those returning from the East Bay.

Adding to today's news, the annual TomTom Traffic Index released this morning indicates that San Francisco’s commute patterns have become increasingly diffused, with higher-than-average congestion now lingering between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. combined with traditional peak hours. Weather conditions today will remain cloudy with temperatures between 50 and 57 degrees, and while the chance of rain is low at 10%, commuters should watch for damp pavement during the evening hours.
