Friday Commute Overview for February 20, 2026

San Francisco commuters should prepare for a challenging Friday as major infrastructure projects across the city enter significant phases. With several key arteries under construction and a large event scheduled for this evening in Mission Bay, residents are advised to plan extra travel time or opt for public transit where possible. Most roadwork is part of the ongoing "Fab-4" rehabilitation projects aimed at modernizing the city's aging freeway structures.

Major Highway and Bridge Alerts

The most significant impact today will be on the Eastbound I-80 Bayshore Freeway. Starting tonight at 10 p.m., the 4th Street off-ramp will undergo a full weekend closure for viaduct rehabilitation. This closure is expected to last until Monday morning, necessitating detours for those heading into the South of Market (SoMa) district. Additionally, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will see daytime lane restrictions. On the Eastbound side (toward Oakland), Lane 1 will be closed between Rincon Hill and the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. for joint rehabilitation work. Drivers should anticipate heavy delays during both the morning and evening rush hours.

Local Roadworks and Transit Adjustments

On the west side of the city, construction on 19th Avenue (State Route 1) continues between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard. Work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and while at least one lane will remain open in each direction, traffic is expected to be slow. For those in the downtown core, the Transbay Howard Streetscape Project will cause intermittent lane closures on Howard Street between The Embarcadero and 4th Street. These upgrades include new safety infrastructure and bicycle lanes, with active work zones occurring between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Public Transport and Special Events

Public transit remains a viable alternative, though there are specific alerts for today. BART has reported that the Richmond station elevator will be out of service for repairs today. Additionally, a single-tracking alert is in effect for late Friday night through the Transbay Tube to allow for lighting modernization work, which may cause 20-30 minute delays for late-night travelers. Riders using Clipper vending machines are reminded to hold their cards against the reader throughout the entire transaction due to ongoing system upgrades.

Finally, for those heading to the Chase Center for the Los Tigres Del Norte concert tonight, Muni will provide supplemental 78X Arena Express service from the 16th Street BART station starting at 5:30 p.m. Expect high traffic volumes in Mission Bay and remember that special event parking rates of $12 per hour will be in effect at nearby meters.
