Major Market Street Closures for Walk for Life; Super Bowl LX Prep Underway

Significant Disruptions Expected on Market Street Today
San Francisco commuters and residents should prepare for major traffic impacts today, Saturday, January 24, 2026, as the city hosts the 22nd Annual Walk for Life West Coast. The event will necessitate the closure of Market Street to all vehicle traffic between 9th Street and Steuart Street. While participants will begin gathering at Civic Center Plaza for a rally at 10:00 a.m., the main march is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., heading down Market toward Embarcadero Plaza. Officials expect the route to remain closed until at least 4:00 p.m., though some areas may not fully clear until 6:00 p.m.
Extensive Muni Reroutes and Transit Alerts
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has announced that nearly 20 Muni lines will be affected by today's march. Most buses typically serving Market Street will be rerouted to Mission Street for the duration of the event. Commuters should expect delays of at least 10 to 15 minutes on the following lines: F Market & Wharves, 1 California, 5 Fulton, 7 Haight-Noriega, 9 San Bruno, 14 Mission, and 38 Geary. For those traveling from the East Bay, BART is operating with single-tracking on the Yellow Line between North Concord and Pittsburg/Bay Point due to essential track maintenance, resulting in 20-minute delays for riders in that corridor.
Super Bowl LX Preparations in SoMa
With Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium just weeks away, security and infrastructure preparations are beginning to impact San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) district. Current security perimeters and event staging have led to lane restrictions and localized closures around the Moscone Center, specifically affecting Howard Street, Fourth Street, and portions of Mission Street. Motorists are advised to avoid the area near Howard and 4th unless necessary, as heavy equipment and increased pedestrian traffic are expected throughout the weekend.
Highways and Regional Roadworks
On the highways, Caltrans continues its "Fab 4" rehabilitation projects. On 19th Avenue (State Route 1), while Phase 1 concrete work is complete, electrical crews are active between Golden Gate Park and San Francisco State University; however, most lanes remain open for the weekend. On US-101 near the Hospital Curve, restriping work is ongoing with overnight ramp closures possible. Additionally, in the North Bay, the Manzanita Park and Ride lot in Mill Valley remains partially closed due to high tide flood warnings, which may also impact Shoreline Highway 1 during peak morning tides.
