Post-Super Bowl Congestion and Departure Traffic

Commuters in San Francisco should prepare for a challenging morning and afternoon drive today, Monday, February 9, 2026. Following the conclusion of Super Bowl LX yesterday, the city is experiencing heavy traffic as thousands of visitors depart the Bay Area. While the primary festivities have ended, the cleanup and breakdown of major event sites, particularly around the Moscone Center and Union Square, continue to dictate traffic patterns and restrict access to major SoMa arteries.

Major Surface Street Closures

Several significant road closures remain in effect to facilitate the deconstruction of the Super Bowl Experience. Drivers should avoid the following areas or plan for extensive detours:

  • Howard Street: Remains closed between 3rd and 4th streets. Partial lane closures also extend toward The Embarcadero due to the ongoing Transbay Howard Streetscape Project.
  • 4th Street: Full closure between Market and Howard streets continues through early Tuesday morning.
  • Mission Street: Expect rolling closures and heavy congestion between 3rd and 5th streets.
  • Civic Center Area: Grove Street between Polk and Larkin remains fully closed until 11:59 p.m. tonight.
  • SoMa Local Streets: Minna Street (between New Montgomery and 3rd) and Jessie Street (between New Montgomery and Annie) are closed until 2:00 p.m. today.

Highway and Bridge Advisories

On the regional network, Caltrans has scheduled essential maintenance that will impact the midday commute. On the Eastbound I-80 (Bay Bridge), Lane 1 will be closed near the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for maintenance. Commuters heading toward Oakland should expect tailbacks starting at the Fremont Street on-ramp.

In the East Bay, significant delays of up to 30 minutes are expected on Vasco Road between Camino Diablo and the Alameda County line due to scheduled roadwork between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Similarly, El Camino Real (CA-82) will see full closures in segments near Edgehill Drive during the same window.

Public Transit and Service Alerts

Public transportation remains the most reliable way to navigate the city today, though delays are reported across several systems:

  • BART: Ongoing train control modernization work is causing delays of up to 30 minutes on the line between Millbrae/SFO and San Bruno. Additionally, fire alarm replacement work at the Walnut Creek station may cause intermittent escalator outages starting today.
  • Muni: While extra subway shuttles have been running to accommodate crowds, standard bus routes in SoMa and the Tenderloin are subject to reroutes and delays due to the remaining street closures near Moscone Center.
  • Clipper Card Alert: Commuters are reminded that due to system upgrades, users must hold their cards steady at vending machine readers rather than tapping for all transactions today.
