MLK Day Commute: Market Street Subway Closure and Afternoon March Reroutes

Major Transit Alert: Partial Market Street Subway Closure
For those traveling through downtown San Francisco this Monday, January 19, 2026, the most critical update is the partial closure of the Muni Metro subway. Due to necessary PG&E maintenance, the subway stations from Montgomery to Van Ness are closed until 2:00 p.m. today. Muni is operating a hybrid service plan during this window:
- KLM Bus Shuttles: These are running between Steuart Street and Castro Street to bridge the gap in subway service. Riders should look for stops marked with the “JKLMN Metro Bus Sub” signage.
- N Judah Service: The line is currently split, with trains operating between Embarcadero and Caltrain, and separately between Church and Market and Ocean Beach.
- J Church: Trains are operating between Church and Duboce and Balboa Park until the subway resumes.
Full subway service is expected to resume in the late afternoon. Additionally, both BART and Muni are operating on a Saturday service schedule today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
MLK Day March and Central District Reroutes
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day March will impact travel in the SoMa and Mission Bay neighborhoods. Starting at 11:00 a.m., the march will depart from the 4th and King Street Caltrain Station, heading toward Yerba Buena Gardens. Commuters should expect significant reroutes and rolling delays on the following lines between 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.:
- 8 Bayshore, 15 Bayview-Hunters Point Express, 30 Stockton, and 45 Union/Stockton: These lines will experience significant diversions. The 8 and 15 lines will notably miss stops along 3rd Street, rerouting via 2nd and Mission.
- T Third and N Judah: Expect delays as the march crosses the Lefty O'Doul Bridge and moves through the 4th Street corridor.
Evening Commute: Warriors Game and Roadwork
Later this evening, traffic is expected to thicken around the Chase Center as the Golden State Warriors host the Miami Heat at 7:00 p.m. Street closures will be enforced on 16th Street and Warriors Way between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard starting at 5:00 p.m. On the west side of the city, motorists using 19th Avenue (SR-1) should continue to expect delays due to the ongoing rehabilitation project; lane reductions remain in place near Sloat Boulevard with a 25 mph construction zone in effect.
Holiday Parking and Airport Advisories
While today is a holiday, San Francisco parking meters are being enforced citywide. This includes all color-capped meters and passenger loading zones. However, Residential Parking Permit (RPP) zones and weekday daytime street sweeping are not being enforced today. Finally, travelers heading to SFO should check their flight status early, as arrival delays are currently averaging approximately 48 minutes due to holiday volume and localized weather conditions.
