Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters heading into San Francisco this morning, Monday, March 9, should prepare for potential residual delays following a weekend of significant infrastructure work. The major partial closure on US-101 at the "Hospital Curve" is scheduled to wrap up in the early morning hours. Two lanes in each direction between Candlestick Park and Silver Avenue have been closed since Friday night as part of the ongoing Fab 4 rehabilitation project. While lanes are expected to be fully reopened for the peak morning rush, motorists may encounter leftover congestion and shifting lane configurations as crews demobilize and remove temporary concrete railings.

On the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the West Span Joint Rehabilitation Project required multiple lane closures overnight. Eastbound lanes 1, 2, and 3, along with the Essex and First Street on-ramps, were restricted until 7:00 a.m. today. Drivers transitioning from the bridge into the city should expect a slow start as these ramps and lanes return to full capacity. Additionally, Caltrans has scheduled daytime lane closures on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge (I-580) for ongoing maintenance, which may affect those traveling from the North Bay.

Public Transit Updates

Regular Muni riders will see a return to normalcy in Chinatown. The inbound 8 Bayshore bus stop at Kearny and Jackson streets, which was closed for the Lunar New Year Parade festivities over the weekend, is scheduled to resume service with the start of morning operations today. Most other lines that were rerouted for the weekend parade have also returned to their standard routes.

For those traveling between the East Bay and the Peninsula, BART has announced that its train control modernization work continues. Commuters should expect delays of up to 30 minutes on the Yellow Line between Millbrae, SFO, and San Bruno stations starting tonight at 9:00 p.m. and continuing through Thursday. Additionally, a new service schedule for the South San Francisco ferry officially begins today, March 9. Passengers are encouraged to check the updated timetables to ensure their morning departure times have not shifted.

Ongoing Roadworks and Alerts

Construction activity remains high in the Transbay and SoMa areas. As part of the Transbay Howard Streetscape Project, expect intermittent lane closures and delays on Howard Street between The Embarcadero and 4th Street from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. today. This project is implementing new safety upgrades and a protected two-way bicycle lane.

In the "Hairball" interchange area, nightly ramp closures will continue this week. Starting at 10:00 p.m. tonight, the southbound US-101 off-ramp to eastbound Cesar Chavez Street and the Bayshore Boulevard off-ramp will be closed until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday for pedestrian safety improvements. Finally, commuters are reminded that yesterday's transition to Daylight Saving Time may cause increased driver fatigue during the first Monday morning commute of the season. Please exercise extra caution and allow for additional travel time.
