Official City Bulletin: Public Health Alerts and Local Service Notices for January 24, 2026

Official Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Virus Circulation
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has issued an advisory regarding high levels of respiratory viruses currently circulating throughout the Bay Area. As of late January 2026, wastewater surveillance and clinical reports indicate that seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human metapneumovirus are being detected at elevated rates. These winter viruses often present with similar symptoms, including cough, fever, and body aches.
- Vaccine Access: Residents are reminded that science-based vaccination remains the primary defense against severe illness. Per state regulations, health plans must cover recommended vaccines with no cost-sharing or prior authorization.
- Preventative Health: The San Francisco Health Service System (SFHSS) encourages all members to prioritize preventive care appointments, including dental and vision screenings, which are essential for long-term well-being.
- Support Services: City employees may contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for mental health support and stress management resources during the winter season.
Notice of Regulatory Change: Carryout Bag Requirements
As of January 1, 2026, new restrictions under California State Law (SB 1053) are in effect for all retail establishments in San Francisco, including grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores. These regulations are part of a continued effort to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable practices.
- Banned Materials: Retailers are no longer permitted to distribute plastic carryout bags at the point of sale.
- Paper Bag Standards: Stores may only provide recycled carryout paper bags. A minimum charge of ten cents ($0.10) per bag is mandatory for all customers, including those utilizing delivery services.
- Exemptions: Produce bags for unwrapped foods, pharmacy bags for prescriptions, and dry cleaning bags are currently exempt from this requirement.
Transportation and Infrastructure Update: SFO Operations
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has officially transitioned its management to the new Airport Integrated Operations Center (AIOC). This 22,000-square-foot facility serves as a unified 24/7 hub for security, 911 dispatch, and facilities management. The center utilizes emerging technologies to monitor airport conditions proactively, ensuring seamless coordination during peak winter travel periods. Additionally, major infrastructure projects, including the 1111 Sutter Street residential tower and the SF Gateway industrial project, remain active construction zones with associated sidewalk and traffic modifications.
