Health Advisory: Tuberculosis Contact Investigation at Archbishop Riordan High School

The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has issued a formal health advisory regarding a tuberculosis (TB) outbreak at Archbishop Riordan High School. Following a large-scale contact investigation, officials have confirmed three active cases of the infectious disease and more than 50 cases of latent tuberculosis within the school community. In coordination with city health officials, the school has suspended in-person instruction for the first week of February, implementing a hybrid learning model to allow for further testing and cleaning. While the risk of transmission to the general public is considered low, health officials are requesting that local medical providers prioritize screenings for individuals affiliated with the school. Latent TB is not contagious, but the department stresses that it can develop into active disease if not monitored and treated promptly.
