Public Notice: Lunar New Year Parade Street Closures and Transit Advisory

Grand Lunar New Year Parade: Free Muni and Extensive Street Closures
The City and County of San Francisco officially announces that the annual Lunar New Year Parade will take place this Saturday, March 7, 2026. To facilitate the celebration and ensure public safety, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is offering free Muni service citywide all day, with the exception of cable cars. Residents and visitors are encouraged to utilize public transit to reach the festivities.
Extensive street closures will be in effect to accommodate the parade route and formation areas. Notable impacts include:
- Formation Closures: Starting at 2:00 p.m., 2nd Street between Market and Mission will be closed.
- Parade Route Closures: Beginning at 3:00 p.m., Market Street (between 2nd and Geary), Geary Street (between Market and Powell), Powell Street (between Geary and Post), and Kearny Street (between Geary and Pacific) will be closed to all vehicular traffic.
- Transit Reroutes: Most Muni routes typically operating on Market Street will be diverted to Mission Street. Service is expected to return to normal by approximately 10:00 p.m. once the roadways are cleared.
Additionally, the San Francisco Bay Ferry has added extra afternoon and evening trips on the Oakland and Alameda routes to accommodate the anticipated influx of travelers for the parade.
Department of Building Inspection: Scheduled System Maintenance
The Department of Building Inspection (DBI) has issued a service advisory regarding monthly server maintenance. Beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6, through 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026, several online services will be unavailable. This outage affects the online permit tracking system and the processing of electronic permits for electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and reroofing projects. The new PermitSF portal for digital in-kind replacement permits will also be offline during this window.
Public Health Advisories: Mushroom Safety and Measles Awareness
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) maintains an active health advisory regarding an increase in severe mushroom poisonings in the Bay Area. Residents are urged to avoid consuming wild mushrooms gathered in local parks or forests, as toxic species can closely resemble edible varieties. Furthermore, a statewide health alert remains in effect due to an increase in measles cases across California. Health officials recommend that all individuals ensure their vaccinations are up to date, particularly before attending large public gatherings like the weekend’s parade.
Official Proclamations for March 2026
The Board of Supervisors has officially designated March 2026 as Women’s History Month in San Francisco, recognizing the vital contributions of women to the city’s heritage and future. Additionally, the city is formally observing Iranian American Heritage Month throughout March to celebrate the cultural and civic impact of the Iranian American community.
