Arrests and charges follow deadly shooting near a Western Addition playground

San Francisco police have arrested two teenage boys in connection with a shooting that killed 15-year-old Jayda Mabrey and wounded two other youths near a Western Addition playground late last week. The arrests came after investigators developed probable cause and booked both minors into the city’s Juvenile Justice Center on homicide-related allegations.

The shooting occurred Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at about 5:13 p.m. near Golden Gate Avenue and Laguna Street, close to the Margaret S. Hayward Playground and within blocks of City Hall. Officers arriving at the scene found three victims under 18 with gunshot wounds. All were transported to a hospital; Mabrey died from her injuries, while the two other teens—a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy—were treated for injuries described as not life-threatening.

What investigators say happened

Authorities have said the shooting grew out of a fight among youths that escalated into gunfire. Reports indicate officers in plain clothes observed an altercation immediately before shots were fired, an element that became central to the early timeline of the case. Investigators also collected evidence including video and firearms as the inquiry moved from initial response to identifying suspects and seeking arrest warrants.

Because the suspects are juveniles, their names have not been released. Police announced Tuesday, Feb. 3, that a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old had been arrested the prior day, Monday, Feb. 2.

Prosecution decisions now shift to juvenile court considerations

By Thursday, Feb. 5, the case had advanced into charging decisions. Prosecutors filed charges against the two minors, including homicide-related counts connected to Mabrey’s death and attempted-homicide counts tied to the two surviving victims. Public reporting on the charging posture indicates the older teen faces a murder charge, while the younger teen faces attempted-murder and other felony allegations. Authorities have also indicated prosecutors are evaluating whether to seek to have the 16-year-old tried as an adult, a decision that typically turns on factors such as the alleged conduct, available evidence, and statutory criteria.

Victim identified; school community mourns

Mabrey was identified by family as a student at Gateway High School. Family statements shared publicly described her as an uninvolved bystander caught in crossfire; they also said a younger sibling witnessed the shooting but was not physically injured. A memorial and community grieving activities have formed in the days since her death, while police have continued to request information from the public as the investigation remains active.

  • Incident date and time: Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, about 5:13 p.m.

  • Location: Golden Gate Avenue and Laguna Street, near Margaret S. Hayward Playground

  • Victims: three minors shot; one death confirmed

  • Suspects: two minors, ages 15 and 16, arrested and charged; names withheld due to age

The case remains under investigation as it proceeds through juvenile-court and charging-review steps, with prosecutors weighing whether any portion could be moved into adult court for the older suspect.
