Incident reported late Monday morning near Russian Hill

Four people were injured Monday, Feb. 9, after a cable car incident at the intersection of Hyde Street and Broadway in San Francisco, prompting an emergency response and temporary service disruptions on two of the city’s three cable car lines.

The San Francisco Fire Department said the call came in shortly after 11:30 a.m. Two passengers were transported to a local hospital with injuries described as minor. Two other people were evaluated at the scene and declined medical transport.

Authorities had not released a detailed account of how the incident unfolded by Monday afternoon. Transit officials said they were investigating and noted a reported medical issue tied to the event, without providing additional specifics.

Service impacts on Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines

The disruption affected the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines, which share track segments and operate through some of the city’s steepest corridors and busiest visitor routes. The municipal transit agency temporarily rerouted cable cars via Washington and Powell streets and deployed shuttle buses to move riders along a portion of the affected Hyde corridor.

Service impacts lasted for more than an hour. Transit officials reported that delays had cleared and regular service resumed on both lines shortly before 1 p.m.

  • Location: Hyde Street and Broadway

  • Time reported: shortly after 11:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 9, 2026

  • Injuries: four total; two transported with minor injuries; two treated on scene and declined transport

  • Transit impacts: reroutes and bus shuttles; normal service restored before 1 p.m.

Context: a series of recent incidents and ongoing infrastructure work

Monday’s collision followed other recent cable car incidents in San Francisco, including a mid-December event in which passengers were injured after a cable car abruptly stopped on the California Street line. In another December case, authorities reported injuries after a driver struck a cable car and left the scene.

Separate from incident investigations, the cable car system has also been the focus of infrastructure upgrades in recent years, including maintenance work on underground components that guide the moving cables. Those projects can require occasional segment closures and substitute bus service while work is performed.

What investigators will need to determine

Key questions remain open, including whether the Hyde-and-Broadway event involved another vehicle, a mechanical or track-related problem, or a medical emergency affecting operations. Officials have not announced a timeline for findings.

Cable cars operate without seat belts in open-air configurations, and sudden stops can lead to passenger injuries even without a high-speed collision.

Transit and emergency officials said the investigation was ongoing Monday afternoon.
