San Francisco City Bulletin: Health Advisories, Transit Alerts, and Public Meeting Notices

Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Respiratory Virus Surge
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has issued an official advisory regarding significantly elevated levels of respiratory viruses currently circulating throughout the Bay Area. As of late January 2026, wastewater surveillance and clinical reports indicate a high prevalence of seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human metapneumovirus. Residents are urged to prioritize vaccination as the primary defense against severe illness. Under current state regulations, health plans must cover recommended vaccines with no cost-sharing. Those experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or body aches are encouraged to seek timely medical consultation.

Regulatory Reminder: Plastic Bag Restrictions
The City reminds all retail establishments, including grocery stores and pharmacies, that new restrictions under California State Law (SB 1053) are now in full effect. Retailers are prohibited from distributing plastic carryout bags at the point of sale. Only recycled paper bags may be provided, with a mandatory minimum charge of ten cents per bag. Produce bags for unwrapped food and pharmacy bags for prescriptions remain exempt.
