San Francisco honors Claude the albino alligator by renaming Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse Drive segment

A civic tribute for a long-time California Academy of Sciences icon
San Francisco has approved a commemorative street renaming in Golden Gate Park to honor Claude, the albino American alligator who lived at the California Academy of Sciences for 17 years and became one of the city’s most recognizable animal residents.
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission voted to commemoratively name the stretch of Music Concourse Drive that runs between JFK Promenade and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive as “Claude the Alligator Way.” The naming is commemorative and does not change the legal street name.
From museum resident to public symbol
Claude hatched in 1995 at an alligator farm in Louisiana and arrived at the California Academy of Sciences in 2008. Over his tenure, the academy has said he welcomed more than 22 million visitors, becoming a fixture of family trips, school visits and repeat local outings at the Steinhart Aquarium.
Claude’s public profile expanded well beyond his enclosure. The academy built programming around him, including a livestream webcam introduced in 2025 that allowed online visitors to watch him in real time.
Death and posthumous recognition
Claude died on December 2, 2025, at age 30. A necropsy performed by veterinary experts found extensive liver cancer, with evidence of liver failure and signs of systemic infection. The academy said treatment options were limited and noted that diagnosing serious illness in apex predators can be difficult because they often mask symptoms until late stages.
On January 18, 2026, the academy held a public memorial event in Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse. The ceremony coincided with the unveiling of signage marking “Claude the Alligator Way,” formalizing the city’s tribute on the roadway bordering the museum campus.
How the naming fits into San Francisco’s commemorative map
Commemorative namings are a common municipal tool for marking civic memory without the administrative and logistical burdens of fully changing addresses and official records. In this case, the selected segment sits at the entrance corridor to one of the park’s most visited cultural institutions, placing the tribute where museumgoers and park visitors naturally pass.
Location: Music Concourse Drive segment between JFK Promenade and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, adjacent to the California Academy of Sciences.
Type of change: Commemorative naming; legal street name remains Music Concourse Drive.
Key dates: Claude died Dec. 2, 2025; public memorial and signage unveiling held Jan. 18, 2026.
The commemorative designation places Claude’s name on a central route in Golden Gate Park, reflecting his role as a long-term ambassador animal for science education in San Francisco.
