What happened Monday morning

Electric service and Muni Metro subway operations in San Francisco were restored Monday morning following a planned overnight Pacific Gas and Electric Co. outage centered on the Civic Center area.

The shutdown began around midnight and affected about 3,600 electric customers. It also interrupted Muni Metro subway service between Van Ness and Embarcadero stations. During the outage window, transit service continued through surface alternatives, including buses and hybrid train operations, before full subway operations resumed around 10:30 a.m. Some residual delays were expected after service returned.

Why PG&E scheduled the outage

The planned outage was tied to ongoing work at the Mission substation, a key facility in San Francisco’s electric grid that was damaged by a fire in December 2025. That fire contributed to a major citywide outage on December 20, 2025, when electricity was interrupted for roughly 130,000 customers at the peak and public transportation experienced widespread disruption. The incident prompted temporary measures, including deployment of mobile generators in parts of the west side of the city as crews worked to stabilize service.

Monday’s operation was described as part of a transition away from temporary generation and toward normal, permanent grid configuration as repairs proceed.

A larger planned shutdown set for overnight Monday

A second, larger planned outage was scheduled for late Monday night, starting at midnight. The expected duration was about two hours, with an estimated 14,000 customers in the Richmond and Sunset districts slated to be affected.

PG&E indicated that customers in the impacted areas were to receive notifications through channels such as text messages, voicemail, and email, and advised residents and businesses to plan for a brief interruption during the overnight hours.

Operational impacts and what residents should watch for

  • Transit: Planned electrical work near core infrastructure can affect subway operations even when surface routes remain available.

  • Neighborhood effects: Overnight outages are intended to reduce daytime disruption, but they can still impact building systems, refrigeration, and communications equipment.

  • Street safety: Following recent citywide outages, city officials have reiterated that nonfunctioning traffic signals should be treated as four-way stops.

The overnight switchovers are part of a broader repair and restoration effort after damage at the Mission substation, a central node in San Francisco’s power network.

Further phases of substation repair work are expected as PG&E continues efforts to return equipment to full service and reduce reliance on temporary power infrastructure.
