Official Holiday Observance and Service Impacts

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, 2026, most City and County of San Francisco administrative offices, including City Hall and all San Francisco Public Library locations, will be closed. While essential emergency services remain fully operational, residents should take note of significant changes to transit, parking, and public health guidelines active for the holiday.

Transit and the MLK Day March

The Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation will host its annual commemorative march today. The procession is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:00 a.m. at the Caltrain Station (4th and King streets) and will conclude at Yerba Buena Gardens. In coordination with this event, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has announced the following impacts:

  • Muni Schedule: All Muni transit lines will operate on a Saturday schedule.
  • Reroutes: Between 10:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., the 8 Bayshore, 15 Bayview Hunters Point Express, 30 Stockton, and 45 Union/Stockton lines will undergo temporary reroutes to accommodate the march.
  • Commemorative Fares: Digital MLK commemorative tickets are valid for use on Muni bus and rail services from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (excluding Cable Cars).

Parking Enforcement Regulations

Parking enforcement will follow specific holiday protocols today. The SFMTA will continue to enforce parking meters (including all color-capped meters and Pay-or-Permit zones), white passenger loading zones, and nightly street sweeping (12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.). Safety violations, such as parking in red or blue zones or blocking fire hydrants, will also be strictly enforced.

The following parking programs are NOT enforced today:

  • Residential Parking Permit (RPP) zones.
  • General parking time limits.
  • Weekday daytime street sweeping (6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.).
  • Commuter shuttle tow-away zones.
  • Unmetered yellow and green zones.

Public Health: Wild Mushroom Advisory

The San Francisco Department of Public Health has issued a seasonal advisory regarding the high prevalence of toxic death cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides) following recent wet weather. Foraging for wild mushrooms in city parks and open spaces is strongly discouraged. Public health officials warn that these mushrooms can cause severe liver damage or death if consumed. Residents should also ensure pets are kept away from wild fungi during walks.

Waste Collection and Meetings

Recology will maintain its normal collection schedule for trash, recycling, and compost today; there are no holiday delays for residential or commercial pickup. Additionally, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has cancelled its regular meeting for this week, with the next session scheduled for January 27.
