Super Bowl LX Festivities Begin with Significant Traffic Shifts

As San Francisco kicks off a week of celebrations leading up to Super Bowl LX, commuters should prepare for substantial disruptions in the SoMa and Civic Center districts starting today, Monday, February 2, 2026. The Bay Area Host Committee and SFMTA have implemented several key road closures to accommodate the Super Bowl Experience and related media hubs, which will remain in effect through the coming weekend.

Major Road Closures and Detours

The most significant impact for downtown commuters is on Mission Street. Starting today, Mission Street between 3rd and 5th streets is restricted to local access only. These closures will occur daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. through February 8. While Muni and local access will be maintained, through-traffic is strongly advised to use Market or Folsom streets as alternatives. Additionally, 4th Street and Howard Street near the Moscone Center are experiencing rolling lane closures as the Super Bowl Media Center goes fully operational.

In the Civic Center area, Grove Street between Polk and Larkin is now closed as of 6:00 a.m. this morning. This closure is scheduled to last until February 9 to support the "BAHC Live!" events at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Commuters using the Van Ness corridor should expect heavier-than-usual congestion at the intersections of McAllister and Hayes streets.

Public Transit and Regional Commute Updates

  • BART: Riders are reminded that a 6.2% fare increase took effect on January 1, 2026. While daytime service is running on a standard Monday schedule, those traveling late tonight should anticipate up to 30-minute delays between Millbrae, SFO, and San Bruno stations after 9:00 p.m. due to ongoing train control modernization work.
  • Muni: While there are no major reroutes for the 14 Mission or 14R Mission Rapid today, expect intermittent delays due to the increased pedestrian volume near the Moscone Center. Supplemental 78X Arena Express service is available for those heading toward the Chase Center for evening activities.
  • Caltrain: Service continues to operate on its fully electrified schedule. Commuters traveling from the Peninsula should note that Caltrans has initiated full weekday closures of El Camino Real (CA-82) in Burlingame between Carmelita and Grove avenues for tree removal, which may push more traffic onto Highway 101.

Bridge Tolls and Regional Alerts

Motorists are reminded that tolls increased on the seven state-owned Bay Area bridges at the start of the year. Furthermore, new carpool requirements are now in effect for all bridges except the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. For those crossing the Carquinez Bridge, lane closures remain in effect from 3:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through March, adding potential delays for North Bay commuters.

Drivers are urged to use transit whenever possible this week to avoid the extreme congestion expected in the downtown core. If you must drive, allow at least 30 to 45 minutes of extra travel time.
