Commemorating a Legacy: The MLK Day March and Festival

Today, San Francisco honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a series of major public events centered around the theme of community and nonviolence. The premier event is the annual MLK March and Parade, which is expected to draw thousands of participants. The march begins at 11:00 AM at the 4th and King Street Caltrain Station. Participants will journey 1.5 miles, crossing the Lefty O'Doul Bridge and stopping at Willie Mays Plaza to commemorate the historic Selma-to-Montgomery marches before concluding at Yerba Buena Gardens.

Following the march, the celebration continues at the Yerba Buena Gardens Main Stage with the MLK Music Festival from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. This free event features a diverse lineup of award-winning artists and performers. Simultaneously, a Health and Wellness Festival will be held nearby, offering community resources and screenings starting at noon.

Museum Celebrations and Free Community Days

Several of the city's premier cultural institutions are opening their doors for free today to mark the holiday. The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) is hosting a Free Community Day from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visitors can enjoy a rich schedule of live performances, including:

  • Prescott Circus Theater: High-energy youth circus performances taking place outside the museum.
  • Mahealani Uchiyama: A cultural presentation in the MoAD Salon exploring the links between the Civil Rights Movement and Indigenous rights.
  • The Glide Ensemble: A powerful afternoon performance of freedom songs honoring Dr. King’s message.
  • Family Activities: Hands-on art projects and gallery scavenger hunts for younger visitors.

Additionally, SFMOMA is open with special exhibitions such as "KAWS: FAMILY" and the vibrant textile works of Sheila Hicks. It is a perfect day to explore the "Al Wong: Twin Peaks" installation before it closes later this week.

SF Art Week: The Debut of Art.Fair.Mont

For art enthusiasts, today marks a significant highlight of the ongoing SF Art Week. The Fairmont San Francisco is hosting the debut of "Art.Fair.Mont," a new art fair showcasing a variety of contemporary works. The fair is open to the public from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the historic hotel on Nob Hill. It provides a unique opportunity to view curated collections in one of the city's most iconic settings without the need for a prior appointment, as entry is free for this special exhibition.

Community Meetups and Volunteering

For those looking to give back, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area is hosting its MLK Day of Service. Local volunteers are gathering at various park sites across the city to participate in habitat restoration and park maintenance projects. Most sessions run until 3:00 PM, providing a hands-on way to honor the spirit of the "day on, not a day off."
