Arrests follow investigations in separate SoMa homicide cases

San Francisco police have made arrests in a fatal shooting in the city’s South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood, a district that has seen repeated enforcement attention because of violent crime and street-level instability around key transit and commercial corridors.

In one SoMa homicide investigation from 2021, police said two suspects were taken into custody after warrants were served simultaneously in San Francisco and San Bruno. Officers had responded late May 22, 2021, to a report of gunfire on the 1100 block of Mission Street, where a 25-year-old man was found inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The two suspects were booked into San Francisco County Jail on charges that included murder and conspiracy, police said.

2026 SoMa shooting: suspect arrested within hours and charged

More recently, authorities announced rapid progress in a separate SoMa homicide that occurred in early March 2026. Police said officers responded just after 1:30 a.m. on March 4, 2026, to the 100 block of Sixth Street, where they found a shooting victim who later died at a hospital. Investigators identified a 33-year-old suspect and arrested him later that morning in the 1200 block of Mission Street, police said. Jail records indicated the suspect was booked on suspicion of murder and held without bail.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office subsequently filed a murder case against Siaosi Aleamotuay, 33, alleging he personally used a firearm and also charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors said court documents describe investigators recovering surveillance video that allegedly shows the suspect retrieving a backpack, removing a gun, crossing the street and shooting a victim who appeared to be unarmed. The case remained under investigation as of the charging announcement, and authorities urged anyone with information to contact police.

What the criminal process signals—and what remains unresolved

Arrests and charging decisions can occur on different timelines and do not, by themselves, resolve critical unanswered questions that often emerge after a street shooting—such as motive, relationships between people involved, and whether additional suspects or witnesses are being sought.

  • Police arrests indicate investigators believe there is probable cause for custody.
  • Filing of charges marks a prosecutorial decision that the case meets the legal standard to proceed in court.
  • Key evidentiary disputes—such as identification, intent, and the meaning of surveillance footage—are typically tested later through hearings and trial proceedings.

Anyone with information about recent SoMa violence is typically asked to share tips directly with investigators, including anonymously.

SoMa remains one of San Francisco’s most closely watched neighborhoods for public safety because it blends residential buildings, nightlife, and major commuter routes—factors that can amplify both the visibility and impact of violent incidents when they occur.
