United adds nonstop Portland, Maine–San Francisco flights, creating a new transcontinental link for summer 2026

A new nonstop route connects SFO with Maine’s largest airport
United Airlines is adding a new nonstop destination from San Francisco International Airport: Portland International Jetport (PWM) in Maine. The summer seasonal service is scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 27, 2026, operating once a week on Saturdays. The flights are planned to be operated with Boeing 737 aircraft.
The Portland–San Francisco service is being introduced alongside a second Saturday-only nonstop from Portland to Los Angeles, also starting June 27, 2026. For Portland, the additions mark the airport’s first nonstop service to California, creating a direct transcontinental connection during the peak summer travel period.
What the schedule change means for travelers and the network
For Bay Area travelers, the new flight offers a one-stop-free option to coastal Maine, a market that typically requires connections via major hubs. For Maine passengers heading to Northern California, the new nonstop provides access to a large destination market and to onward connections through United’s San Francisco hub.
Portland airport officials said the additions to San Francisco and Los Angeles also mean the Jetport will have nonstop service to all seven of United’s domestic hubs during the summer 2026 season, complementing its existing portfolio of hub links.
Why Maine-to-California service is drawing attention
The new route pairing has been framed locally as a milestone for Maine aviation because it establishes a direct link between the state and the West Coast—service that previously required connecting itineraries. The Saturday-only frequency suggests a demand profile centered on leisure travel and peak-season movement, rather than weekday-heavy business travel patterns that often support daily service.
