Morning Overview

Commuters in San Francisco can expect a relatively steady morning drive this Friday, February 27, 2026. Weather conditions are currently cloudy with a low 10% chance of rain, meaning road surfaces should remain dry for the majority of the peak commute hours. However, significant disruptions are planned for the afternoon and evening hours due to major neighborhood events and ongoing freeway rehabilitation projects that will impact both local streets and major arteries.

Sunset Night Market Road Closures

Starting at noon today, the Sunset District will see major street closures to accommodate the Sunset Night Market celebrating the Lunar New Year. Drivers are advised to avoid the Irving Street corridor as the following restrictions will be in effect until 11:59 p.m.:

  • Irving Street is closed to all vehicle traffic between 20th and 25th avenues.
  • 21st Avenue and 24th Avenue are closed between Lincoln Way and Judah Street.
  • Intersections at 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th avenues along Irving Street are fully blocked.

While the intersections at 20th and 25th avenues will remain open to north-south traffic, heavy congestion is expected on parallel routes like Lincoln Way and Judah Street as motorists detour around the festivities. SFMTA reports there will be no direct impact on Muni service routes, but passengers should anticipate delays due to increased neighborhood traffic.

Chase Center and Mission Bay Alerts

Traffic will build significantly in the Mission Bay area starting in the late afternoon. The Chase Center is hosting a major concert tonight with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Expect "No Parking" zones and heavy congestion on the following streets:

  • 16th Street between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard.
  • Warriors Way between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard.
  • Northbound Illinois Street between Mariposa and 16th streets will be restricted to local access only.

Freeway and Major Artery Updates

Caltrans is continuing its extensive rehabilitation work on the city's primary transit corridors. Commuters using I-80 and US-101 should note these specific impacts for today:

  • Howard Street remains under active construction between The Embarcadero and 4th Street. Expect intermittent lane closures and delays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. as part of the Transbay Howard Streetscape Project.
  • Nighttime travelers should prepare for ramp closures starting at 10 p.m. on the Eastbound I-80 off-ramp at 7th and Bryant, as well as the Westbound I-80 on-ramps at 7th/Harrison and 4th/Harrison.

BART and Public Transit

BART service has stabilized following yesterday's network equipment failure at the Lake Merritt data center. For today's commute, riders can expect normal frequencies, though officials are monitoring the system for any residual delays. Notably, major escalator repairs at the 16th St. Mission and 19th St. Oakland stations are scheduled for completion today, which will improve passenger flow during the evening rush.
